Formerly the property of a master-potter, La Bastide was a country house with 7 beautiful bedrooms. In 1998, 4 new rooms and suite were added, each of individual design and named after Provençal themes. The house was restored and renovated with the help of local crafts people. The interior designing and thus, the ambiance, is the work of Tonia Peyrot. The establishment is managed by Sarah Chailan who works for Alain Ducasse for several years. In the kitchen working behind the scenes, you will find Wilfried Hocquet and his team (all of them are former pupils of Alain Ducasse). Each day one menu with 2 or 3 dishes is proposed by the kitchen team. Their cooking, awarded one star by the red guide (Michelin) in 2002, has the flavors of Provence and the Mediterranean. Although country-style, it is also delicate and sometimes surprising. They make the most of the home grown produce from the vegetable garden of La Bastide and supplies bought at the local markets. Alain Ducasse wanted his inn to be warm and welcoming so that each guest will feel at home. Each and everyone is able to wander around, even the door of the kitchen is open.
There are several activities that are proposed so that each day is unique and pleasurable. "I really fell for Moustiers and the surrounding area" Since December 1998, la Bastide Moustiers belongs to the voluntary chain « Chateaux & Hotels Collection », of which Alain Ducasse has taken the presidency. At the foot of the village of Moustiers, very near to the Gorges du Verdon, he has created a little corner of Paradise. A resident on the French Riviera for more than fifteen years, Alain Ducasse discovered the Alpes de Haute-Provence while out on long motorbike rides. And of course, he fell in love with Moustiers----Sainte----Marie and its outstandingly beautiful countryside. In 1993, he started looking for a fine propertya fine propertya fine propertya fine property where, on one hand, he could stay when out on his motorbike rides and, on the other hand, enable him to welcome those who might be looking for a little corner of paradise a long way from the urban hub-bub.
« For my week-ends, I wanted a pleasant place offering simple cooking. So, I decided to create a country-house for the lovers of Giono's Provence » explains Alain Ducasse. In 1994, he purchased a property, once owned by a master-potter, and transformed it into the most charming placemost charming placemost charming placemost charming place. This is how La Bastide de La Bastide de La Bastide de La Bastide de Moustiers came into being. In order to recreate its 17th century provencal style, La Bastide de Moustiers has been restored and renovated by regional craftsmen including an interior designer from Moustiers, a painter from Villeneuve, a seamstress from Puimoisson, a basket-maker from Forcalquier, a glass-maker from Biot, a ceramist from Salernes, and antiquarians from Mouans-Sartoux... Even a water-diviner was consulted with regard to the perfect site for a stone fountain. Alain Ducasse has, of course, filled the inn with the celebrated Moustiers earthenware. The Bastide's crockery comes from « Le Soleil », a famous studio in the village, and is decorated with flowers typical of Provence, herbs and vegetables painted by Florine Asch. One sitting-room has been decorated with pieces made by the village potter. This particular room is called the « Salon des Faienciers » (the Potters' Sitting- Room). "I wanted to combine refinement, comfort and simplicity" Considering La Bastide de Moustiers to be his own countryhis own countryhis own countryhis own country----house, Alain Ducasse put a lot into its layout and kept a close eye on the work. He went antique-hunting in the local shops in order to furnish La Bastide de Moustiers in the provencal style. |
