It was a cold, clear day in 1946 when Claus Riedel made his leap to freedom. Jumping from a train on the Brenner pass not only marked an incredible turning point in Claus’s life, but was a defining moment in the history of the Riedel family: the start of the modern era of the glassmaking dynasty.

The Riedel family and its affiliation with glass can be traced back to Johann Christoph Riedel 1st generation who became known as the “Ur Riedel” – meaning the original Riedel. In 1723, Johann Christoph Riedel was murdered as he returned from his travels as a glass trader, the two murderers believing him to be carrying a lot of money. Johann Christoph’s story became famous, being retold all around Bohemia, from generation to generation. The circumstances of his death are identical to the murder described by Friedrich Schiller in “The Cranes of Ibykus”, written in 1895, and it is thought that the terrible story may have inspired the great author.
