Evolito Partners with Flying Whales for Electric Propulsion in Next-Gen Airships

Evolito Limited has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Flying Whales, a company at the forefront of developing large-capacity airships. This collaboration represents a significant advancement in the realm of sustainable cargo aviation, showcasing innovative solutions to logistical challenges while minimizing environmental impact.

Under the agreement, Evolito will supply its cutting-edge D250 electric propulsion motors for the LCA60T airship, which is slated for its inaugural test flight in 2027. The LCA60T is a 200-meter-long airship engineered to transport heavy loads of up to 60 tonnes, aimed at offering a unique solution for moving oversized cargo in areas with limited infrastructure. By integrating Evolito’s advanced motors, Flying Whales seeks to establish a more efficient and eco-friendly transportation method, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable logistics practices globally.

Flying Whales chose Evolito’s D250 electric motor due to its remarkable power and torque density. Each LCA60T airship will be equipped with 32 D250 motors. A key factor in selecting Evolito as their electric motor partner was the company’s capability to scale production to meet Flying Whales’ anticipated manufacturing requirements.

Evolito’s electric motors are renowned for being the smallest and lightest in their category. The D250 motor offers a leading power density of 18.5kW/kg, delivering 240kW of peak power while weighing just 13kg. In 2023, Evolito received Design Organisation Approval from the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority and is working towards achieving POA and ISO9001 certifications later this year, which will help to lower certification costs for Flying Whales.

Vincent Guibout, CEO of Flying Whales, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “When designing an airship, weight is critical. In the three years we have been working together, Evolito has demonstrated the ability to deliver best-in-class power density from its unique axial flux electric motors along with the ability to ramp production to meet our forecast requirements. There is an excellent synergy between our teams—we share the same passion for enabling electric flight through engineering excellence and innovation—and I look forward to working with Evolito towards the first LCA60T flight and beyond into production and commercial operation.”

Dr. Chris Harris, CEO and co-founder of Evolito, added, “Flying Whales’ LCA60T airship is a truly inspirational aircraft, demonstrating that electric flight can help solve global challenges—from reducing harmful emissions to delivering critical infrastructure sustainably. Evolito’s unique axial-flux technology enables a new class of lightweight, compact, and high-performance electric motor, opening up many new aircraft designs, mission profiles, and use-cases—setting new standards in electric propulsion for Aerospace.”

Evolito, based in Oxford and supported by investors such as B-Flexion and Oxford Science Enterprises (OSE), continues to drive the future of electric aviation by providing industry-leading electric axial flux motors, motor controls, and battery systems for the aerospace market. These systems offer superior power, torque, and energy densities, proving essential in eVTOL, Urban Air Mobility, helicopter, and fixed-wing applications.
