Kilauea Volcano Erupts Again: Spectacular Lava Fountains!

Kilauea Volcano, situated within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, has resumed its eruptive activity, marking the seventh occurrence in recent weeks. The latest eruption began on December 23 at the volcano’s summit crater and has been characterized by intermittent pauses and resumptions. Most recently, on January 27, the activity intensified, beginning with minor lava spurts that evolved into a continuous lava fountain, as reported by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

On the volcano’s northern side, the lava fountains have surged to heights of 100 to 120 feet (approximately 30 to 40 meters), leading to the formation of several lava streams. Meanwhile, the southern side exhibits a smaller fountain and a minor lava flow.

Since the initial eruption on December 23, each event has persisted for durations ranging from 13 hours to eight days, with intermissions lasting less than a day up to 12 days. The current eruption is anticipated to continue for 10 to 20 hours.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is home to two of the globe’s most active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa. The ongoing eruptions are visible from numerous vantage points within the park, and the lava currently poses no threat to residential areas or structures.
