Shannan Mondor. Expert Author & Coach

Shannan Mondor

Shannan Mondor is the author of the famous book How the Hell Did I Get Here. While talking to us during the interview, she describes her work as an emotionally resonant and unfiltered account of one woman’s struggle with addiction and an eventual victory over alcoholism, mental illness, and the destructive cycle of addiction that had plagued her family for generations.

She goes on to describe how the pandemic, the idea of house-bound people around the world and thoughts about her own experiences compelled her to write. The stories from her life put you in the front row of an ordeal that demonstrates the strength, determination, and courage it took for her to decide that she no longer wanted to live this way and to do whatever it took to shield her children from the normalization and influence of addiction in today’s culture.

Helping us understand the perils of going through recovery, Shannan describes how because of her personal experience, she is able to educate her students on the threats of substance abuse as well as ways to deal with them. For her, creating an impactful brand for herself like Fear Fighter helped her find her own personal peace after years of struggling to overcome her fears, her isolation, and the judgment of others. She comes to understand that life is a spiritual journey during which one has the potential to gain insight from every occurrence, personal interaction, and connection that one has along the way. Shannan shares insights from her work as a life coach too and stresses that one must cultivate a healthy connection with yourself and coming to terms with the fact that you do have the ability to bring about positive change in your life.

During the last part of our conversation, Shannan shares her hobbies with us and allows us take a look at a day in her life. A life which seems focused on extending a helping hand towards those who are in need of love, support and assistance in fighting mental illnesses and eradicating addiction from their lives.

Shannan, you wrote the book How the Hell Did I Get Here? to help others deal with trauma. What led you to write the book?

The pandemic is what had brought me to the forefront of going deep into my soul and getting to know who I really am. I could see so many people expressing their pain and fear on social media. Not to mention the increase in alcohol sales, addiction and then suicide. It was at that point that I decided to reach out to others to help them to heal so I decided to share my thoughts, feelings and emotions of what I was going through on a daily bases, thru posting videos on social media. I knew they needed to know that they were not alone and so many needed help. I knew that if I could help one person, I was doing some good in this world and I was fulfilling my purpose at that point in time. After I had posted videos for a few months I got the sense that I was not being truthful, especially to myself of who I really was and it was starting to bother me because I was giving others the impression that I had it all together but really, I was not. I had already been in sobriety for over a year but they didn’t know my truth on my alcoholism so I slowly started to reveal who I was and as I went deeper into telling my truth the more freeing it became. My book then became the manifestation of all my videos and posts that I had put on social media.

How did you deal with your own trauma and mental health issues?

I had been going to a therapist since I was in my early 30’s but never realized the damage of what my childhood had taken on me. That didn’t come to my realization until I had hit my rock bottom and went to a Treatment Centre for my alcoholism. Do I believe all those years of therapy helped me, NO. Reason being is I was always questioned about the past over and over again and I was never taught the tools to go forward, I was stuck in the past. Treatment was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. I was educated on so many areas in my life including my relationships, abuse, addiction and alcoholism. I could really show my emotions and I was guided to heal by expressing my pain, fear and anger. I was in a safe place to let it all out for the very first time in my life and I was not judged. I realized that I was damaged goods but I was also worthy enough to be healed and to become the person I was meant to be.

How can your experience help others heal from trauma?

Through all that I have learned through my own personal trauma and experiences which is a lot, trust me, I know what I am talking about! My trauma may be different from yours but trauma is trauma. It is through my experiences of abuse, fear, pain, anger, lack of self-worth, abandonment and so much more that I have healed from and will for the rest of my life. I have grown, learned and with that I now have the insight to help others. I know what it feels like and am not afraid to talk openly about my feelings or experiences which so many people are.  Others hold back as they are worried about being judged but I want to be that role model, that voice until they have the strength and will someday to no longer be silent. I can relate, I understand, I have been through it and most of all I talk about it publicly.

Can you tell us about some of the tips and advice you give to clients struggling with mental health issues?

The one thing that I have learned is NO ONE and I mean NO ONE will love you and respect you until you love and respect yourself. You need to really get to know who you are, what you want in life and push forward to get it. You alone are responsible for making your life happen whether it be good or bad. Everything comes from within and I know this whole heartedly.

What is the Fear Fighter brand? How did you develop it as a brand?

I came to the realization that there are really only 2 main emotions, love and fear. Love is love but fear has so many roots to it. Fear branches into anger, anxiety, shame, pain, stress and the list go on and on. Most of our illnesses that we receive in our body stems from fear as it causes DIS-EASE. I love my brand as I have made that choice to fight that fear head on and take it to the next level of getting me out of my comfort zone to make me grow as that is how we become the better version of ourselves. We can’t grow if we stay stuck in our fear or comfort zone. I strongly believe that our purpose on this earth is to grow, learn and teach so we can help others to also become the best versions of themselves.

You were affected by motivational speakers early in your life. How did those individuals connect with you and inspire you?

Wow, they saved me and gave me hope. They helped me to believe in myself and to have a different perspective on thinking.
The teachings that I learned helped me to become a better person and to build new belief systems within myself. I will never stop following these speakers as I know that there is always something that I need to learn and from that I can gain knowledge to pass to others.

Can you tell us about your work with psychic Deborah Graham and the relationship the two of you have?

This very special woman came into my life at a time that I was desperate for help and suicidal. She helped me to become the person I am today and I will always love her for that. With her Spiritual Coaching she helped to raise my vibration, taught me how to meditate and how to believe in myself. The energy work she performed on me helped to bring me clarity so that I could see things for what they really were not what I thought they were or wanted them to be. By doing this I could recognize what was good for me and what I needed to eliminate from my life. Deborah and my relationship now has grown to be a strong friendship and she always will a part of my life and a mentor for me.

You became a professional life coach in 2020. What can a life coach do for an individual that they work with?

As a Life Coach I know that there is always room for improvement in education especially when it comes to help myself and others so that is why I have continued my education in this area. I am currently enrolled with the Proctor Gallagher Institute and am advancing my education to be of better service to help clients. With the in-depth teachings of the late Mr. Bob Proctor, one of the main speakers of the movie “The Secret” and his partner Sandy Gallagher, I am being taught by the best in the coaching field. I am there to teach you to become the best version of you. I help you to find your vision, set goals, help you to recognize your limiting beliefs, improve your self-image. I teach you to break through these barriers as we are our own worst enemy and in order to grow we must get in the uncomfortable zone and to recognize that success is on the other side of fear. You will have a specific goal set in place and an action plan on how to move forward to achieve that goal. I am there to keep you on track and hold you accountable. When doubt or fear starts to creep in, I am there to guide you back on track. I am that reminder that you are responsible for YOUR life so take charge and be the person you are meant to be!! If you are interested in my assistance, I would gladly like to set up an appointment by you reaching out to me at [email protected]. I can guarantee you will not be disappointed!

What was the book writing experience like for you? Are you planning to write further books?

It was very healing for me. There is nothing in that book that I regret writing and it made me realize that everything in my life happened for a reason. I spoke my truth for the very first time ever and it was the most freeing experience I ever had. I know deep in my soul that I am here to help others and if it took me to go through all that pain then it was 100% worth it. I don’t regret any part of my life and I know that I am a very blessed person to be where I am today. Yes, I am going to write another book and its title is “Who in the Hell Do They Think They Are? My Experience of Eliminating Negative Friends, Family and Circumstances to Keep My Sobriety” which I plan for it to be published in 2023.

Along with writing and coaching, you do speaking engagements for large groups. What are your speaking engagements like and how can attendees benefit from them?

I also include a reading from my debut book and Author signing. My speaking topic is about fighting that fear that we all hold inside and how it holds us back. Fear is a huge topic and I go into depth of the many areas such as limiting beliefs, self-image and decision making, just to name a few, that I experienced and what areas of my life that it affected me to the point of alcoholism. I talk about how we can better ourselves and what steps I personally experienced to become the best version. I know many resonate with what I talk about which draws the audience in to want to improve their lives and become the best version of themselves. People will always relate to what I am saying whether they are experiencing it for themselves or they know someone that will benefit from my speaking engagement. Everyone leaves knowing that there is always room to grow, keep your dreams alive, set your goals and most of all never give up on yourself.

Shannan, how is a day in your life?

I don’t want to go too much into detail of my every day but I will tell you that some things are always very consistent with me. I believe that others will benefit from me sharing. I journal every morning on 10 things that I am so grateful for, write out my life goal 10 times morning and night, write out my self-image of who I am and becoming. I sit quietly in the morning for 5 minutes so the universe can guide me to what I need to focus on as an importance for that day and I send love to 3 people that I dislike so I can move forward through forgiveness. I never miss a day and this keeps me focused and is another way of me wanting to be the best version of me.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I am a Reiki Practitioner and I heal others in person or long distance. Since Reiki is an energy healing modality and energy has no boundaries I am able to heal people from around the world in the convenience of your own home. Also, I am an exercise nut! I love spin, yoga and going to the gym. My close friends know that about me but not the general public. All health, whether it be physical, mental and spiritual is very important to me. Last but not least, I LOVE CHOCOLATE CAKE!!!

Any hobby?

I love to cook and must say I am good at it!!! I study Bob Proctor and his teaching every day. I love to read and always wanting to improve who I am. My favorite books are about Near-Death Experiences, anything about the Spirit world and self-help teachings.

Choose two of your favorite quotes and write them here.

“Decide what you want

Decide what you are prepared to give up to get it

Set your mind to it

Get on with the work” H.L. Hunt

“Everything Changed the Day I decided you are my lesson, not my enemy” Unknown

If you had the power to change just one thing in the world, what would it be?

I would change societies view on alcohol and how it is put on a pedestal and glamourized. Alcohol has now been normalized and plays a huge role in our culture and it is used as an incentive to bribe people to participate in social events, purchase products and to receive services. I feel that society needs to be educated on the seriousness of alcoholism and addiction and it should not be taken lightly. Alcohol is a drug and is the number one killer over cocaine and any other drug. To be a drinker is normal and sobriety is frowned upon, now how absurd is that? Things need to change especially when it comes to teaching our children and for our future generations. Talking and educating others on this subject is the only way we can solve the problem on addiction.
