When he was 18 years old, Mr. Sadler, an innocent bystander, was the victim of a shooting incident which left a 9 mm bullet lodged in his heart. Due to being from a small town in Texas (Mineral Wells) there was no trauma center; luckily a Board Certified Heart Surgeon from India, Dr. J.P. (Janardhanna Penagaluru) Reddy happened to be in town. Dr. Reddy was rushed to the small rural hospital and immediately went to work on this 18-year-old kid who was about to die. He coached a surgical team that had no experience in cardiovascular surgery through a four-and-a-half-hour surgery to remove the bullet from Mr. Sadler’s heart, thereby saving his life.
To this day, Mr. Sadler remains in contact with Dr. Reddy and says, “He is my hero; he saved my life.” Among the myriad of accomplishments and recognitions in thoracic and vascular surgery, Dr. Reddy became the first to establish a Thoracic and Vascular Surgical Specialty in a rural hospital and he practiced there for 50 years.
